Idina Menzel gets candid about ‘complicated’ breakup in personal talk

Idina Menzel's work "saved" her amid her split from Taye Diggs.

The 55-year-old actress has recalled going through a "really hard" time personally back in 2013 when her 10-year marriage was ending.

However, at the same time she was also experiencing huge professional success thanks to animated movie Frozen and starring in If/Then on Broadway.

Speaking at a retrospective New York Comic Con panel, Idina - who has Walker, 17, with Taye, said, “We were separating and it was really hard. The story of the show [If/Then] was so much about a woman who’s making different choices in her life and finding her identity.”

“And then Frozen was coming up just as Taye — we were breaking up...,” she recalled, adding, “It was very complicated, that whole time.”

Idina further mentioned, "[But those projects] saved me. It was filling my heart with joy and love and forgiveness and all of that stuff. And also being able to show my son this wonderful film.”

At the time, her signature ballad from Frozen, Let It Go, became a huge hit, which the actress, who is now married to Aaron Lohr, joked was hard on her estranged husband.

She quipped, “The poor guy. It was Let It Go. He’s in a mall and he’s like, ‘F*** this! It’s everywhere, ‘Let It Go, Let It Go.’ Like, ‘I can’t let it go!’”

Idina and Taye met when they starred together in a Broadway production of Rent in 1996, and she previously claimed the Snowpiercer actor faced "disappointment" over their interracial marriage.

She previously said on the Dinner's on Me podcast, “It’s very complicated. I mean, [we’re] very supportive of each other always. [I’m] so excited for him. The thing that came into play more — and he’s talked about it too — is the interracial aspect of it.”

“Because when you’re in the theatre, it’s just not a thing, like, we all love each other and sleep with each other and [are] best friends with whoever wants to be,” Idina mentioned.

She went on to explain, “When you leave that cocoon, and now, in his case … he’s on the cover of Essence and Ebony and being interviewed by all these Black journalists and I think he had his own stuff to deal with that.”

The actress was able to step out of Taye's shadow when she landed the role of Elphaba in Wicked in 2003 and the 55-year-old actor was "so supportive," with her then-husband being “relieved, probably [when I got attention for 'Wicked'], and happy and proud of me.”

“He was always so supportive and probably relieved, so he didn’t have to feel like he was overshadowing me in some way or taking up too much space,” Idina Menzel recalled of her complex relationship with ex, Taye Diggs.
