Matthew Perry’s sister Mia opens up about the 'emptiness' he tried to escape in new doc
Matthew Perry’s sister has shed light on the untold battles the actor was fighting to get sober.
On Tuesday, Netflix released the first teaser video of the late Friends alum’s new documentary, The One About Matthew Perry, featuring his sister Mia Perry Bowick, who revealed that Matthew spent millions of dollars to overcome his addiction.
For those unaware, Matthew passed away tragically in 2023 after an accidental overdose. He was 54 at the time.
In the teaser, Mia said, "My brother would talk about that feeling of emptiness or loneliness that he couldn't quite fill.
"He spent $7 million trying to get sober. That's how seriously he took his disease."
She also told the audience that Matthew distracted himself from his struggles by acting and making people laugh.
Mia shared, "When he made people laugh, it made him feel good.”
After Netflix announced a three-part doc series about Matthew earlier this month, Mia told the streaming platform’s official editorial and media channel, Tudum, “It’s taken time for me to feel ready to share these memories and what it was like to love Matthew through all the complexity of his life — to see him as a whole person, not just as Chandler, and not just as someone who struggled with addiction."
"Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit, and even in his darkest moments, he could still make you laugh and feel loved,” she continued. "I hope this series gives everyone who loved him, whether personally or from afar, a deeper appreciation for who he truly was, and the legacy he leaves behind.”
The One About Matthew Perry is all set to release on October 27.
