'We may lose control': Stephen Hawking warning resurfaces amid AI slowdown calls

Piers Morgan on Sunday shared a clip of his interview with Professor Stephen Hawking where the British journalist asked him about the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the future of human race.

Posting the clip of Instagram, Morgan wrote, "I interviewed Professor Stephen Hawking in 2017, a year before he died, in one of his last interviews. His comments about the threat posed by Artificial Intelligence to mankind seem especially pertinent, and concerning, today."

In the interview while Hawking dismissed the impression that AI or technology was reason behind the rise of Donald Trump , he however said "there's great danger from AI if we allow it become self designing.

He added that AI would then be able to improve itself and "we may lose control."

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies to slow the rate at which they advance model capabilities amid mounting fears of misuse of artificial intelligence, ​outlining a three-step framework intended to pace development and create more time to manage its risks.

"We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI ‌models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain," Amodei wrote in a lengthy essay, shared on X on Saturday.
