Amazon's customer profile page draws on your purchases, searches and Alexa chats, and you can edit it
One Amazon shopper's profile told her she had "flat buttocks". Another was informed that her husband had skinny legs. Neither had typed that anywhere, and both posted screenshots. Amazon's "About You" page has gone viral, and you may want to check yours.
Think of it as a customer dossier. It's built from your purchase history, searches, saved lists, written reviews and Alexa for Shopping conversations. Amazon says it shows which products it's recommending and why.
Business Insider's own staff tried it and found some conclusions acutely accurate and others dead wrong.
Order cat food regularly, and the page will consider that you have a pet cat. Order children's clothing or birthday presents, and it may consider that you have children.
Amazon confirmed to Business Insider that it doesn't use any information collected by third parties to build this page. All the information is based on your shopping activities on Amazon, which means that the pant size you've shared elsewhere will not be listed there.
Open Account, select Shopping preferences and About You. Select any personal piece of information you would like to update and tell Amazon why it is incorrect or ask it not to use this information for making suggestions.
Removing an item tells Amazon not to use it for personalisation. It doesn't delete the purchases, searches or other activity behind it. Your history stays.
Treat the edit as a right of reply, not an erase button. If privacy is your worry, the page shows you what Amazon can infer, but it doesn't change what Amazon has stored.
