OpenAI is pushing its Artificial intellgience (AI) into specialized industries and undercutting open-source rivals on cost.

According to OpenAI's Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar.Sam Altman's tech platform is actively pivoting toward high-value, specialized industrial verticals.

OpenAI is offering custom AI solutions—focusing on sectors including chip design, life sciences and financial services, as businesses increasingly seek AI ​systems tailored to specific tasks.

It also is experimenting with pricing ​based on business outcomes rather than use, as more enterprises demand ⁠return on investment in AI.

Speaking on the company's enterprise strategy, Friar noted that the ChatGPT maker is experiencing surging corporate demand for systems tailored to complex technical tasks.

As part of this push, OpenAI is leveraging its proprietary models—such as those utilized internally to design its custom "Jalapeño" silicon chip to help corporate clients optimize semiconductor engineering and accelerate hardware development lifecycles.

The strategic shift comes amid mounting competition from open-source and open-weight models, which many enterprises have adopted as cheaper alternatives to proprietary frontier systems.

The push into industry-specific AI and aggressive pricing ​reflects the growing competition OpenAI faces from rivals such ​as Anthropic, as enterprise customers demand more measurable returns from AI spending.

To counter this, OpenAI has rolled out aggressive pricing adjustments, including substantial price cuts on its lower-cost model tiers, which the company claims can prove more cost-effective to deploy than running open-source options through standard cloud providers.

Open-source and open-weight models are widely seen as a ‌cheaper ⁠alternative to frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Friar said OpenAI recently cut the price of its lower-cost Luna model by 80%, helping drive a roughly 10-fold increase in usage. OpenAI's Codex, its coding tool, is attracting customers and has ​25 million users, she ​said.

Friar also highlighted that OpenAI is experimenting with outcome-based pricing models tied directly to business results rather than raw token usage, aligning with a broader corporate push to deliver clear, measurable returns on enterprise AI spending.
