Meta AI glasses hit by criminal complaint over privacy concerns

A German advocacy group has raised significant legal and public concerns regarding Meta AI smart glasses and emphasized allegations of privacy laws violations against the devices.

On Wednesday, digital rights group HateAid released a statement saying that the launch of the devices, the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer violates German digital privacy laws under legal examination in a nation where the right to privacy is highly valued.

In this connection, HateAid managing director Josephine Ballon said: “There is no place to escape from smart glasses. You have to expect at any moment to be filmed and then exposed on the internet.”

The organization underlined the management of Meta, EssilorLuxottica including Ray-Ban along with Apollo-Optik, Mister Spex and MediaMart to the Frankfurt-based cybercrimes unit ZIT.

According to HateAid, its complaint is based on a federal data information privacy law that bans the marketing of telecommunications equipment designed to film people without their knowledge.

The agency, BNetzA said that it was observing closely the smart glasses market but was for now conducting an official inquiry into any violations.

Germany's digital communication previously released a statement on smart glasses in late 2023, adding that smart hardware for video recordings was banned. HateAid further clarified in its statement that it had been sharing examples of image-based digital violence specifically targeting women.

A Hamburg-based state private protection agency was taking proactive steps against the use of smart glasses. Nonetheless, smart glasses are now a discreet monitoring technology that can be concealed under a disguised identity.
