Bloomberg reveals new details on the pocket-sized, screenless AI speaker's design and price
OpenAI's long-rumoured entry into consumer hardware is coming into focus. The company's screenless smart speaker will be shaped like a doughnut and priced above $300, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter, offering the clearest picture yet of what OpenAI's first physical product will actually look like.
Not like conventional smart speakers that rely on being connected to the wall, the speaker created by OpenAI is built to be mobile and is about the size of a hockey puck and easy to bring around the house using just one hand.
The mobility feature mirrors previous reports from the Wall Street Journal where it claimed that the speaker could fit in a user's pocket.
The speaker will be built using premium metals to give it an upscale look, as per Bloomberg, which will rival Apple's design philosophy.
The device is being developed alongside LoveFrom, the design studio founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, after OpenAI acquired Ive's hardware startup io last year.
That acquisition marked OpenAI's clearest signal yet that it intended to move beyond software into physical products, pairing its AI models with design expertise drawn directly from Apple's most celebrated products.
Previous reporting from Bloomberg stated that the device will have mechanical parts which will make it seem more human-like, and it will also have camera systems, microphones, and sensors, which will monitor the user and their surroundings, even email access, to provide more personal and spontaneous assistance.
There will be a light on the speaker to indicate that it is listening. The speaker would basically function as an enhanced version of the current voice mode of ChatGPT, which is set to be released by OpenAI somewhere in 2027.
