If you thought Apple CEO Tim Cook had suddenly switched sides and started promoting Samsung’s latest foldable, there’s a catch. The man in Samsung’s new Galaxy Z Fold 8 ad is actually “Tim Cook from Palmerston North”, a New Zealand man who happens to share the Apple chief’s name and bears a striking resemblance to him.

The ad arrived just as Apple unveiled its iPhone Duo, making the timing hard to miss. Shot in the style of Apple’s polished product launches, the fake Cook tells viewers that “the future is here”, while Samsung takes another swipe at Apple’s real CEO by referencing his recently updated profile picture.

Samsung takes another shot at Apple

The latest campaign continues Samsung’s long-running habit of turning its biggest rival into advertising material. One of its earlier ads mocked iPhone fans for standing in long queues to buy new Apple phones.

Samsung later used a viral image of an Apple fan with a haircut resembling the iPhone’s notch to promote the Galaxy Note 8. Its “Ingenius” campaign also poked fun at Apple’s Genius Bar, with customers asking whether iPhones had features already available on Samsung phones.

In 2024, Samsung responded to criticism of Apple’s “Crush” iPad Pro advert with a more serious campaign. Its ad showed a woman playing a damaged guitar on a recreation of Apple’s set, accompanied by the message that creativity cannot be crushed.

The response came after Apple faced backlash over an advert showing musical instruments, books, art supplies and other creative tools being compressed by an industrial press.
