Marco Rubio warns US-China conflict would be ‘catastrophic’
US-China relations have continued to experience intense strategic, economic, and technological friction
In today’s highly competitive geopolitical landscape zero-sum mentality has prevailed, safeguarding national interests and promoting unilateralism over multilateralism.
When it comes to the US and China, the relationship has always been on a roller coaster ride marked by periods of unpredictability between extreme highs and lows. Be it economy, military, technology and soft power, both countries try to outcompete each other.
In a recent clip while interviewing with Lara Trump on Fox News, the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave a dire warning to the world regarding managing the relations between the US and China.
Rubio said, “Any conflict between the US and China, be it economic or be it military, God forbid, would be catastrophic for both countries and the world.”
“So we have to manage that but we can’t walk away or forfeit our national interests. This is the hard work of foreign policy and it requires every administration to sort of balance these two competing tugs against us.”
The proclamation comes as both nations are locked in economic and technological competition. For instance, the US administration has continued aggressive trade actions, implementing new restrictions and tariffs. China condemned these unilateral US economic curbs.
When it comes to artificial intelligence, both global superpowers are accusing each other of stealing the technologies to train the AI models. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and trade bodies have expanded restrictions on Chinese hardware. Notably, Washington moved to ban foreign-produced advanced robotic devices, including humanoid and quadruped robots, citing national security risks.
In response to these restrictive measures, China also threatened retaliatory measures against the US.
China has actively consolidated relationships with global South nations and international leaders, while Washington has maintained its push to reinforce regional alliances to counter Beijing's expanding footprint.
