You probably use a sponge to scrub dishes and kitchen surfaces. But is it really clean?

Leftover moisture allows germs to grow, so it’s important to sanitise your sponge regularly. The Michigan State University Extension suggests using one of these methods:

* Microwave your sponge (except sponges that contain metallic pads). Make sure it’s completely soaked with water, then microwave it on high for one minute. Allow the sponge to cool before removing it from the microwave.

* Put your sponge in the dishwasher on the longest, hottest cycle.

* Soak the sponge for one minute in a solution of 1/4 teaspoon of bleach in one quart of warm water.
