The love story between Prince William’s parents has been one for the history books, even described as ‘cramped’ because there were ‘three of us’ by his own mother, the late Princess Diana, but it seems that very lesion is one that the heir now carries close to his heart.
Insight into this deeply private part of Prince William’s emotions comes via the very first documentary he and Kate have collaborated on in decades, with royal author Russell Myers.
The book’s title reads, William and Catherine: The Monarchy’s New Era: The Inside Story and since its release the author has been in many an interviews, the most notable of which was with Marie Claire that happened recently.
During a conversation there he said that Prince William is determined to not let history repeat itself, or work out the way it did for his parents. According to Mr Myers this has been something that’s been close to William’s heart “ever since he was old enough to remember the turmoil and chaos that existed in his parents’ relationship”. In light of it he even made himself a personal promise that’s been revealed in this conversation to be the ‘quiet determination’ to ‘break the cycle of misery’.
After all as he explains, “William had spent years agonizing over whether he was making choices that would make his mother proud. At the forefront of his mind were her words concerning the choices that existed when it came to finding a long-lasting love.”
As for his parents and the interview King Charles gave, admitting to infidelity Mr Myers adds, “the day after King Charles’ extraordinarily candid interview with broadcaster Jonathan Dimbleby on June 29, 1994, where for the first time he admitted his infidelity with [Queen] Camilla, Diana raced to comfort the 12-year-old William.”
What happened behind those walls was later described by Diana herself in her own Panorama interview and saw her say, “I went to the school and put it to William, particularly, that if you find someone you love in life you must hang on to it and look after it, and if you were lucky enough to find someone who loved you then one must protect it.”
As for Prince William’s love story after such a tumultuous childhood, he wound up marrying Kate Middleton, now the Queen-in-waiting and senior member of the British Royal Family. The pair share three children, the future King of England Prince George and his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
