An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday extended the physical remand of two suspects, who belong to a political party, till July 26.

The suspects are booked in a 12-year old murder case of Police Inspector Taufiq Zahid, a key member of the 1992 Karachi operation. Police produced the suspects, Rehan and Zeeshan, who were said to be the employees of the University of Karachi, before the administrative judge amid high security.

The investigation officer of the case requested the judge to extend the physical remand of both the suspects as the police wanted to interrogate them further. Accepting the IO’s request, the judge allowed the police to keep Rehan and Zeeshan with them on physical remand for the next three days.

According to the police, the suspects are involved in killing Inspector Taufiq in April 2004 within the limits of the Gulberg police station.

The slain Inspector took part in the Karachi operation launched by the then interior minister General (retd) Naseerullah Baber in 1992.

He was shot dead inside the Muhammadi Mosque in Karachi’s Federal B area on April 23, 2004 when he was there to offer Friday prayer. Besides him, four other worshipers, presented in the Mosque, also sustained minor injuries.

Death sentence

A local court on Friday awarded death sentence to a man, Moosi, and life imprisonment to his accomplice, Shan alias Babloo, for killing their neighbour, Iqbal Shah, in 2012.

The convicted men, neighbours of Iqbal Shah in Orangi Town, had killed him over a petty quarrel between their children.

The case against the two men was registered in the Orangi Town police station.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Sameena Ghori announced capital punishment against the key accused and handed over life imprisonment to his associate. Family members of the deceased were present in the court and as the court announced its verdicts against the accused, a sister of slain Iqbal Shah expressed her satisfaction over the decision.
