GILGIT: A day after suspending discretionary funds of the chief minister, ministers, and other elected representatives a month before the end of their tenure, the chief election commissioner (CEC) of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has explained the rationale behind the decision.
“The primary objective is to prevent the misuse of public resources and ensure free and fair elections,” said an official statement on Wednesday. “Historically, discretionary development funds have been exploited ahead of polls, undermining public trust. The Commission’s timely intervention breaks that cycle.”
Under GB Order 2018, Article 91(4), the Election Commission has the authority to take administrative measures before or during elections to maintain impartiality, transparency, and public confidence. The Elections Act, 2017, further empowers the Commission to act independently, free from interference, with its directives binding on the government and administration.
