UAE unveils first glimpse of AI-powered ‘Trackless Train'

Dubai’s Road and Transport Authority RTA is making a big move to roll out the future of smart mobility at the Gulf Information Technology Exhibition GITEX Global 2025.

UAE showcased its first AI-powered "Trackless Train" at the World’s most significant technology exhibition happening at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

Starting from October 13, 2025, the GITEX 2025 technology event will continue until October 17, 2025.

The grand technology event at the Dubai World Trade Centre invited more than 6,800 companies from 180 countries, offering each group or firm a platform to showcase their breakthroughs redefining urban mobility and safety.

RTA participation in GITEX 2025 spotlights its strategy to integrate AI, the Internet of Things (IoT) and predictive technologies across every aspect of smart mobility.

While addressing the event, RTA expressed that their projects reflect the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the UAE and Dubai's Ruler, to position the Gulf city as the smartest and happiest city in the World.

“We are leveraging AI and big data analytics to deliver predictive, proactive, and integrated transport services that enhance quality of life for residents and visitors alike,” informs RTA.

Instead of using fixed tracks, the tram will use optical navigation, LiDAR, GPS and camera-based guidance systems to follow painted lines on dedicated lanes.

Powered by AI’s advanced technology, the system will autonomously detect obstacles and adjust its paths in real time, offering a flexible, sustainable, and cost-efficient alternative to traditional rail systems.

The virtual tracking method introduced for trams will allow for flexibility in routing and it will also reduce construction costs and time by eliminating traditional tracks.

RTA believes that Dubai’s Trackless Tram will add a new dimension to the emirate’s advanced public transport system including the "Dubai Metro," which is one of the world’s most efficient driverless metro networks and the "Dubai Tram" considered as the first tram system outside Europe powered by a ground-based electric supply.

Moreover, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Directors of RTA Mattar Al Tayer, informs that the Trackless Tram symbolizes Dubai’s ambition to lead the world in smart, sustainable public transport.

Matter Al Tayer said that Dubai is continuously accelerating towards new innovations and success.

From trackless trams to air taxis, RTA is providing seamless sustainable travel experience.

“This innovation marks a qualitative leap in mobility — an adaptable, autonomous solution that integrates seamlessly with city traffic while supporting our vision for a smarter, happier, and more sustainable Dubai,” Mattar added.

Additionally, the new trackless trams are part of RTA's new development plan for 2024-2027 that includes 22 major projects aimed at elevating service quality and efficiently for Dubai's 2.2 million daily transit users.

Dubai’s trackless train key features

The new trackless train powered by AI would be deployed at eight different locations across Dubai.

The tram will be powered by electricity and will have three carriages with a capacity of up to 300 passengers.

Moreover, the tram will operate at a maximum speed of 70 km/h, with an operational range of 25 to 60 km/h and a single charge will enable the tram to cover a distance of up to 100 km.
