The sports community is mourning the sudden death of former NFL defensive lineman and Super Bowl champion Arthur Jones, who passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the age of 39.
Arthur Jones was a respected defensive lineman who was part of a famously athletic family.
He was a fifth-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2010 and helped the team win Super Bowl XLVII in 2013. He later played for the Indianapolis Colts and Washington before retiring after the 2017 season.
He was the older brother of UFC legend Jon Jones and NFL defensive end Chandler Jones. He was often seen as a role model and inspiration to his younger siblings.
The Baltimore Ravens expressed deep sadness over his passing. Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta said:
“We are terribly saddened to learn of Arthur Jones’ sudden passing. Arthur’s presence was a gift to everyone he encouraged.”
The exact cause of death for Arthur Jones has not been officially announced by the family or the Baltimore Ravens.
Local media reports, citing dispatch records, mentioned that a defibrillator at Jones’ residence went off on Friday morning, which led to an emergency response.
A Sheriff’s spokesperson also told an outlet that Jones’ pacemaker went off, automatically alerting his doctor, and that Jones had a pre-existing heart condition. However, the cause of death remains unconfirmed by officials.
Jon Jones is Arthur’s younger brother and is widely regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. In the wake of his brother Arthur’s passing, the UFC community, including Conor McGregor, has offered condolences.
Conor posted on X: “Very sad to hear this news. Arthur was a great man, a friendly giant! God speed Arthur Jones.”
