NEW YORK: Indian-origin Google parent Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai’s net worth has soared to $1.3 billion, according to Forbes.

Pichai became CEO of Google parent Alphabet in 2019 when he was tapped to replace Google cofounder Larry Page. He holds around 0.02 percent of Alphabet and has sold more than $500 million worth of shares, before taxes. The story of Pichai is a modern-day story of ambition, intellect and the quiet determination to climb to the pinnacle of the tech world.

From a modest two-room apartment in Chennai, India, to a sprawling 31-acre estate in Los Altos Hills, California, Pichai’s journey is shows the power of a single-minded focus on innovation. As the CEO of both Google and its parent company, Alphabet Inc, his life is a picture of extraordinary success and the luxurious lifestyle that comes with it.

Born as Pichai Sundararajan, he grew up in a family where money was tight and luxuries were bare. A telephone was the rare luxury item in his home.

His first airplane ticket to the United States for a scholarship at Stanford University cost more than his father’s annual salary.

Yet, it was this early foundation that gave him the values of hard work and humility that eventually went on to define his career. After earning a Masters from Stanford and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Pichai joined Google in 2004, where his star began its meteoric rise.

Pichai’s rise through the ranks was marked by pivotal contributions, from the development of the Google Chrome browser to overseeing the Android operating system. His calm, consensus-driven leadership earned him respect across the company, culminating in his appointment as Google’s CEO in 2015 and later as the head of Alphabet in 2019.

Pichai’s annual salary alone is a reported to be $8.8 million, but his compensation has often been far higher, as seen in his $226 million stock award in 2022.

In an industry often dominated by charismatic founders like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai’s success story stands out. He is a billionaire who didn’t create a company from scratch, but rather one who rose through the ranks.
