ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has taken cognizance to the reported SIM data breach and ordered a high-level inquiry.
Taking immediate notice of the data leak, the minister has sought a comprehensive report within two weeks.
The directive follows the recent public concern and media reports on the potential exposure of sensitive personal data linked to mobile phone subscribers across the country. Such a breach could have significant security implications, including identity theft, financial fraud and other cybercrimes.
The reported leak underscores the critical need for robust data protection measures in the telecommunications sector.
In response to the minister’s order, director general National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has constituted a special investigation team and tasked it with thoroughly examining every aspect of the alleged data leak to determine the source and extent of the breach.
The primary objectives of the investigation are to identify the individuals or entities responsible for the data leak, determine how the breach occurred and initiate appropriate legal action against those found involved.
The NCCIA has confirmed that the special investigation team will present its findings and recommendations within 14 days.
The swift action highlights the government’s commitment to protecting the citizens’ data and holding those accountable for cybercrimes.
Sher Ali Khalti from Lahore reports: According to media reports, sensitive data of thousands of Pakistani citizens — including federal ministers, senior government officials, and key government figures — has been found for sale on the internet.
On online platforms, highly sensitive information such as mobile SIM owners addresses, call records, copies of national identity cards and details of foreign travel is available at minimal prices.
Reports suggest that data ranging from the interior minister to the PTA spokesperson can be easily purchased online, and all such records are even accessible through a simple Google search.
