LAHORE: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has appointed former Peruvian international and seasoned coach Nolberto Solano as the new head coach for the country’s U23 and senior men’s national teams.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani hailed the appointment as a landmark moment, stating that Pakistan has “never had a coach of such a high profile before.” During a press conference held in Lahore, Gilani emphasised that Solano’s vast experience will be a “valuable learning opportunity” for local coaches and will play a “key role in strengthening modern football in Pakistan.”
Gilani also highlighted the launch of Pakistan’s first-ever national futsal team, which is currently preparing for its inaugural international tournament. He confirmed that both FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have assured their full support for the development of football in the country.
Solano, a former winger who played for clubs like Newcastle United and Aston Villa, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity. “It’s a great responsibility and a challenge for me,” he said. The new head coach acknowledged the issues facing Pakistani football but also shared an optimistic outlook.
“In the few days I’ve spent here, I’ve seen an abundance of talent,” Solano stated. “The players are passionate and eager to play quality football.” While urging for patience, Solano articulated his vision for the future, believing that “we can achieve something meaningful” and raise the game to a competitive standard. “Our immediate focus is on the U23 squad, and we’ll give it everything we’ve got,” he added, stressing that “with hard work, balance, and time, we can build a strong foundation for the future.”
