PESHAWAR: The staff and students of Qurtuba University organised a flag-hoisting ceremony and a ‘freedom march’ on Wednesday to mark the 78th Independence Day of the country.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr Saiful Islam, led the flag-hoisting ceremony in the presence of senior faculty members, including Dr Fakhrul Islam, Maulana Dr Mohammad Ismail, Dr Abdus Salam Khalis, Dr Mohammad Saeed, Dr Fazlur Rahman Qureshi, and others. Officials from the Higher Education Regulatory Authority and the regional office of the Higher Education Commission were also present on the occasion.

The event was jointly organised by Qurtuba University of Science and Technology and HERA. Special prayers were offered for the prosperity of the country.Speaking on the occasion, Dr Saiful Islam said that the country had been achieved after the great sacrifices of the forefathers. He said that it was the responsibility of every citizen to demonstrate commitment and unity for putting the country on the path of development.

He said that the university and other educational institutions have a greater role to play in creating awareness among the masses. He added that the menace of corruption was crippling the country.It was a matter of serious concern, he said, that mostly educated people holding senior offices in the government machinery were involved in the menace of corruption.

He urged the participants to join hands for an effective fight against social evils and to make the country a prosperous one. Special prayers were also offered for the Palestinian Muslims on the occasion, who have been passing through the worst sufferings at the hands of the cruel Zionist forces.
