An officer was killed, and the suspect was shot dead on August 8, 2025, in a deadly shooting near Emory University and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
David Rose, a DeKalb County police officer, was responding to the firing scene and was killed. The 33-year-old man was a father of two with a third baby on the way.
CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson from DeKalb County told Associated Press (AP): “This evening, there is a wife without a husband. There are three children, one unborn, without a father.”
The white male gunman, whose identity is unknown yet, was also found dead on the second floor of the CVS building. It is unclear whether his wounds are self-imposed or caused by the police.
Darin Schierbaum, the Atlanta Police Chief, while reporting to the event, said, “We do not know at this time whether that was from officers or if it was self-inflicted.”
The gunfire hit multiple CDC offices, and the bullets shattered the windows. However, no CDC staff or visitor got injured.
There are no reports of other casualties, but four people have been taken to the hospital due to anxiety and stress.
A lockdown has been announced at Emory University, the CDC, and nearby facilities.
The FBI and the Atlanta Police Department are assisting the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in the Atlanta shooting incident.
The news is unofficial, but law enforcement agencies claim that the active shooter’s family said that he was suffering from an illness that he blamed on the COVID-19 vaccine. Shooter’s main target was the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia.
Andre Dickens, the Atlanta Mayor, said in a press conference, “The gunman’s motives are still unknown this early in the investigation.”
