The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the police has claimed arresting a key associate of Lyari gang commander Shakeel, alias Badshah, in an injured state.
According to SIU chief SSP Shoaib Memon, a major breakthrough was achieved by the SIU in an encounter with a gang near Mirza Adam Khan Road. He said that during an exchange of fire, an associate of the Lyari gang commander, Shakeel, alias Badshah, was injured and arrested.
The suspect, identified as Abu Huraira, was found in possession of a pistol and ammunition. SSP Memon stated that the second accomplice of the gang managed to escape after firing at the police party.
Shakeel, the gang leader, is said to be operating the Lyari gang from abroad. Efforts are under way for his arrest as well.
According to police, Shakeel had demanded Rs3 million in extortion from a local dairy trader and threatened to kill him in case of non-payment. A case regarding the extortion demand and threats was registered at the Kalri police station.
SSP Memon revealed that Shakeel used Abu Huraira as his main operative to collect extortion money. The injured suspect has been shifted to a hospital for medical treatment.
