Talking to The News, former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), Kamran Murtaza, said they have formed a 2-member committee to investigate into the incident in which the schoolteacher was allegedly burnt alive, but, when the police started investigation into the issue, no one bothered to even talk to them.

“We were approaching the police department, but none of them responded and, even we had no knowledge what was going on during the investigation. So we will hold an important meeting after Eidul Fitr and decide about future course of action in this respect,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that two former presidents of the SCBA, Asma Jahangir, and Kamran Murtaza, was nominated by the lawyers community to probe the murder of 18-year-old schoolteacher Maria Sadaqat, who was allegedly burnt alive for refusing a marriage proposal earlier this month in Murree.

Both former presidents are part of a committee constituted by incumbent President of SCBA Syed Ali Zafar that would also include the association’s executive member Tehmina Mohibullah to ensure that no one is able to abuse the process of law.

Kamran Murtaza said when the case of murder of the schoolteacher would be heard in the court then it would mainly focus on three issues, including dying declaration, medical report and circumstantial evidences.

One of the family members of Maria Abbasi revealed that the police have so far not succeeded to get to this video that may play a critical role during the case hearing in the court, adding “at the time of the incident the mobile phone carried by Maria Abbasi did not have any balance.”

Kamran Murtaza said when they first approached the investigation officer, they were told to come to Murree, but when they reached there they came to know that he had gone to Rawalpindi.

“I would not say that the investigation officer deliberately went to Rawalpindi to avoid meeting us, but it would have been better if he would talk to us or inform us about the investigation,” he said.

He said now they would decide their future policy in their meeting to be held after Eidul Fitr, adding “at this moment no one should give decision whether the girl was murdered or she committed suicide because the court would better decide about it. But the investigation process must be transparent so that no one can raise objections about it.”
