comfort zone is space where an individual feels ease, familiarity and comfort. It is a perceptive zone where one would like to live, in a state of satisfaction and peace. People in their comfort zone feel in control and have a sense of knowing what to expect and how to respond to various situations. There is less likelihood of facing uncertainty and unexpected challenges. The familiarity of the environment makes them more comfortable and relaxed at work. The stress and anxiety linked to tasks and deadlines is less.
An experiment conducted in 1908 by psychologists Robert M Yerkes and John D Dodson found that relative comfort generates a constant level of performance. No matter how enjoyable or comfortable this might be, it limits personal growth and development. It takes courage to think and plan a step ahead and make an effort to broaden one’s horizon.
The fear of taking a risk, thinking one might fail or is not capable, can confine one to a ‘safe’ bubble. The idea of doing something new can then make them feel apprehensive and uneasy. Doubting personal potential and ability and fear of failure hold one back. Such thoughts trigger anxiety and make one feel insecure. Every time one gets an opportunity, one acts in the same manner and does not wish to break the bubble. The pattern of comfort over progress takes over.
Comfort zone hormones
When a person chooses to lives in their comfort zone, the body releases less of the stress hormone, cortisol. This “fight or flight” hormone prepares one to face challenging situations. If the body is not exposed to unexpected situations, emergencies or uncertainties, the body remains in a less anxious state. The body and mind feel safe and secure. Stepping out of one’s comfort zone not only raises cortisol levels, but also brings in some happy hormones like endorphin, serotonin and dopamine. These hormones are associated with pleasure and happiness and produce a sense of accomplishment.
Stepping out of the comfort zone is a conscious choice to embrace growth, challenge and self-discovery.
People are often unable to make a remarkable impact as they are scared of taking bold steps in the first place. The demotivation can come from family and peers who keep discouraging one, always highlighting the downside of any venture. For example, a good salary job prevents one from becoming an entrepreneur, or limits one’s capabilities for expanding their competency. The aim, ideally, should be to put one’s potential to maximum use.
Beyond the comfort zone
The first thing to do is to define a goal. One can start with small steps, one at a time. Initially, it might be a bit worrisome to handle things in a new way. The first week might seem difficult or challenging, but as days pass the changes will blend in. For example, it might become an entirely different experience for a house lady to step into the world outside or a student who has just begun a new life at a hostel or abroad. One has to constantly remind oneself that the change will soon become familiar. In the process, one will gain new experience.
It is always beneficial to be under the mentorship of experienced personnel who can guide and share precious experiences. This also keeps one motivated in hard times and enables one to execute his plans effectively.
What keeps one going is a positive approach. Whatever one does is a learning experience. Even the time spent relaxing or sleeping boosts one’s energy. Therefore, one should never be afraid of taking adequate rest when needed.
The key to success is to be ready to accept new challenges coming your way. The thrill of life starts at the end of the comfort zone. When one steps out of this zone, they overcome the fear of losing, becomes brave and can win any challenge.
Hope and fear
“Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and think of what could go right.”
When the odds are against you and hope seems a luxury, that’s exactly when you strike the hammer and dig deep, overcoming your fears and bringing out the best in you to the surface. Believe in yourself and fight with every fibre of your being.
Patience is crucial when venturing outside one’s comfort zone. Growth and change happen gradually, not instantaneously. It takes time to adapt to new situations, overcome fear and build confidence in one’s abilities. Being patient with oneself, recognising that setbacks are normal and celebrating small victories along the way are essential for successful personal development and growth.
Role of mentors
Mentorship plays an important role in an individual’s growth by providing guidance, support and a network of resources for personal and professional development. Mentors help people identify their strengths, address weaknesses and achieve their career goals by offering practical advice, valuable insights and a supportive environment. It is always beneficial to be under the mentorship of experienced people who can guide and share their experiences. This also keeps one motivated in hard times and enables one to execute one’s plans effectively.
