KARACHI: Armed men gunned down a traffic police constable in the Boat Basin area of the city late on Tuesday night.

Boat Basin police said motorcycle-borne suspects targeted 27-year-old Zain Ali, son of Ali, near the Mai Kolachi Phatak police post and escaped from the scene. The victim died on the spot.

After receiving information, police and rescue workers reached the scene and took the deceased to Jinnah Hospital in an ambulance.

SHO Riaz of the Boat Basin police station said that during an inspection and initial investigation, it was found that the cop was sitting outside the Railway police post where the suspects shot him three times from behind and fled. The police have collected three shells from the scene.

Police Constable Ali was posted at the Sultanabad traffic police post. He was a resident of Kenmare and hailed from Mansehra. He had joined the police force two years ago. Investigation sources said it is early to confirm the motive behind the murder and they would investigate the incident from enmity and target killing aspects. Moreover, they said they were checking for the availability of CCTV footage to determine and identify the suspects. A case has been reported and investigations are underway.
