Announcing Rs10 million in compensation for the family of Amjad Sabri, the Sindh chief minister told members of the provincial assembly on Saturday that some leads had been found in the murder case and the renowned qawwal’s killers would soon be arrested.

During his speech in the assembly to wind up the general debate on new provincial budget, Qaim Ali Shah also assured the lawmakers that Owais Ali Shah, the kidnapped son of the Sindh High Court chief justice, would soon be rescued.

The chief minister said at present he could not disclose the progress made so far in the Sabri murder case.

Without naming the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, he urged member of the opposition party to cooperate with the government in the aftermath of Sabri’s murder instead of criticising the government, which was trying its best to nab the murderers as soon as possible.

Besides Rs10 million for Sabri’s family, the chief minister also announced a job for his widow if she agreed to it.

In addition, the federal and provincial governments would bear all expenses of the education of Sabri’s children.

Shah said separate committees had been formed comprising officials of police and other law-enforcement and intelligence agencies to investigate the cases of Sabri’s murder and the kidnapping of the SHC CJ’s son. A separate supervisory committee has been constituted to the monitor progress of the two cases.

The chief minister said he had held meetings with the IGP, the Rangers DG, and other senior law-enforcement officials to review the progress of the two cases.

Law and order situation

The chief minister said the law and order situation had improved significantly in Karachi and cases of target killings and kidnappings in the province had remarkably reduced prior to the recent two cases.

He said when his government had come into power, there were 17 cases of kidnapping in Karachi and 93 in the rest of the province and they had all been solved.

Shah noted that Sabri was very dear to the ruling Pakistan People’s Party as the founder of the Pakistan People’s Party, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was a friend and admirer of father, Haji Ghulam Farid Sabri.

PPP leaders’ visit

Leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party visited the residence of late Sufi qawwal Amjad Sabri and offered condolences to the bereaved family on Saturday.

During the visit, provincial education minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro was accompanied by CM advisor on information and archives Maula Bux Chandio, special assistant to CM Rashid Rabbani and MNA Nafisa Shah.

They condoled with the mother and brothers of Amjad Sabri, who was gunned down in Liquatabad area on Wednesday.

Expressing their profound grief, they maintained in a joint statement that the extraordinary contribution of the legendary artiste towards the art of qawwali had made him a national treasure.

They assured the family members that the killers would be brought to book and that every possible step was being taken in this regard.

They further said that the investigation agencies had been ordered to arrest the killers and their facilitators on a priority basis.

Moula Bux chandio stated that the services of the slain qawwal would long be remembered.

Chandio added that the nation had been deprived of an internationally acclaimed qawwal who represented Pakistan as an international icon.
