Rawalpindi : Excessive food, heavy meals and repeated intakes of sweet and spicy dishes along with sugary and carbonated drinks on Eidul Fitr may spoil the festive occasion causing stomach disorders.

According to health experts, individuals who have had regular fasting in the holy month of Ramazan should avoid heavy meals on Eidul Fitr because the stomach, intestines and colon remain on rest for a month and after a month-long fasting; the organs may not be in a condition of accepting excessive food, heavy and spicy meals along with repeated intakes of tea and soft drinks. Too much burden on the digestive system after a month-long fasting may cause serious problems particularly among chronic patients. Consumption of excessive amounts of food on Eid days is a dangerous practice and according to health experts, it is far better to have modest meals preferably in morning and evening on Eid days than to spend time at a hospital. Haphazard intakes of different types of foods and drinks throughout the day must be avoided to stay healthy and active on Eid days.

Experts say that it is certainly a fine tradition to visit friends and relatives on Eid days but it is not advisable to have huge quantities of sugary and carbonated drinks along with sweet and spicy dishes repeatedly in a day. One must avoid heavy intakes at every friend’s or relative’s house. Instead one should take the dishes just to taste if necessary.

Repeated and excessive intake of spices, tea, coffee, cola or other beverages and ‘sharbats’ may cause stomach disorders. For people who have fasted for a month, it is better to have a moderate breakfast on Eid day as it would be sufficient for the body functions. Dinner on Eid days should not be delayed until the very end of the night instead one should finish eating at least two hours before going to bed.

It is worth mentioning here that every year on Eid days, almost all public sector hospitals in the region receive significantly a heavier influx of patients with the complaints of problems related to the digestive system. Chronic patients particularly those suffering from stomach ulcers, diabetes, heart diseases and hepatitis should take extra care while taking meals on Eid days.

Experts say that to avoid certain health threats, it is better to have meal twice at least during the three days of Eid instead of thrice daily. In case of having abdominal pain and discomfort due to the gastric problem on Eid days, one should avoid taking spicy, acidic, fried or fatty foods.
