Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon on Thursday ordered increasing police visibility on the streets of Karachi so that the sense of security among people can be raised.
IG Memon chaired a meeting at the Central Police Office to review the street crime and law and order situation in the province. He ordered all DIGs and SSPs to launch a crackdown on drug mafias, absconding and wanted accused in murder and other serious cases, habitual criminals and street criminals at district, zone and division levels.
He said that while breaking the nexus of drug mafias during this campaign, and ensuring access to the hideouts of absconding accused and their arrest, all possible steps should be taken to ensure their solid prosecution, resulting in exemplary punishment.
He ordered district officers to go out in the field, and visit bazaars, highways and markets so that the public can be feel a sense of security. He said the officers should also stay in touch with traders’ organisations, market committees and ordinary people to ensure timely resolution of their problems.
Zonal and divisional DIGs gave detailed briefings on the eradication of drug mafias, arrests of wanted and absconding accused in murder cases, and making policing more effective during Ramazan.
The IG said that it has been observed that drug addicts and absconding accused are involved in most of the street crime incidents. Therefore, he added, every police department needs to be proactive, taking extraordinary measures to prevent street crime.
He said that ensuring law and order depends on concrete action against drug mafias and arrests of absconding accused. However, he added, all officers need to schedule meetings in the relevant districts and units, form police teams and increase intelligence.
He also said bail of accused is not possible in cases that are based on solid evidence, challans and facts. Help should be taken from cameras installed in markets to keep an eye on criminals, he added.
Memon said that a police surveillance system should be created to monitor roads and highways during the night so that the entire policing strategy and action plan can be made foolproof in every respect. He said hotels, motels, factories, etc. should not only keep an eye on fugitives and wanted suspects with the help of hotel I/O, EVMs and other apps but also ensure their arrests.
