With the advent of Ramazan, an increase in the prices of broiler chicken, like other food items, has been witnessed across Karachi.

In the Karachi division, the price of broiler chicken has increased by Rs120 to Rs150 per kilogram. On Tuesday, broiler chicken was being sold at Rs720 to Rs800 per kilogram. Before the arrival of Ramazan, the chicken meat was being sold in the city at prices ranging from Rs600 to Rs650 a kilogram.

An office-bearer of the Sindh Poultry & Retailer Association reportedly claimed that chicken distributors had artificially created a gap between demand and supply. He said distributors had halted the supply, which had led to the rise in prices.

He mentioned that the Karachi commissioner has set the price of chicken at Rs650 per kilogram, but they cannot sell at this price. He also stated that during raids by the district administration, fines of up to 30,000 rupees are being imposed, and under the current circumstances, it is not possible for them to make such payments. He warned that if distributors do not resume the supply promptly, they may start a strike on Thursday.
