The Sindh police on Monday held a ceremony at the Police Headquarters South to honour the writers, intellectuals and other guests who participated in the 16th Karachi Literature Festival (KLF) that concluded a day earlier. A delegation from the Oxford University Press Pakistan among others also attended the ceremony.
Sindh Police Museum Curator Saud Mirza thanked former provincial police chiefs Aftab Nabi and Mushtaq Mahar, current police chief IG Ghulam Nabi Memon, DIG Maqsood Ahmed Memon, and other DIGs and SSPs for organising the programme.
Former IG Mirza and gave a brief introduction of the Police Museum. A documentary on the history of the Sindh police was also shown on the occasion. The construction work of the Police Museum had been carried out in three phases, and it was finally completed in 2017, following which it was opened to the public. The Police Library contains important documents from 1865 to 1940 regarding law and order that are considered extremely rare and invaluable.
Later, in his address, IG Memon welcomed all the guests. “The praise given by Sir Faqir Hussain Syed to the Sindh police and all its departments is a matter of honour for us.” Memon said Mirza’s continuous efforts and hard work have brought the museum to this position. “The Sindh Police Museum is our pride and honour,” he added.
“As police officers, we see and observe how the police work. The public is hopeful of us, but we also make mistakes. I am grateful to my team who are at the forefront of serving the public day and night.”
He also said that with the support and cooperation of people, police have a good impression among the public. Delhi, Dhaka, Tehran, Kuala Lumpur and Europe are industrial hubs, but Karachi is many times better than all of them in terms of law and order, he claimed.
The IG said that if the crime rate is divided among the 108 police stations of Karachi, there are two cases of crime per police station. Most of the crimes are of motorbike theft and snatching, he added. “We’re working with the CPLC, and also collecting suspects’ data.”
He pointed out that wherever one goes in the city, they would see bumper-to-bumper traffic, with a rush of people in markets and restaurants. He explained that this means that the people are satisfied with police performance.
He thanked Sharjeel Kharal for organising the best programme. IG Memon also presented a shield to Mirza and the Sindh Police Museum DSP. Other guests also spoke on the occasion, and described the Sindh Police Museum as an asset.
