Jakarta: A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck in the Banda Sea in remote eastern Indonesia early Monday, US seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was issued.
The quake struck at 00:25 am (1625 GMT Sunday) at a depth of 428 kilometres (265 miles), about 300 kilometres from Ambon Island, the US Geological Survey said.
The epicentre was far from land, and Indonesia´s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said the quake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami.
Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where tectonic plates collide.
