LAHORE: An Anti-terrorism Court (ATC) reindicted Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi along with other accused in connection with the May 9 violence including the attack on Askari Tower and the torching of Shadman Police Station.
The ATC Admin Judge Manzar Ali Gul held the hearing inside Kot Lakhpat Jail on Monday. During the hearing of the Shadman Police Station arson case, a fresh charge sheet was filed against new suspects prompting the court to reframe charges against all accused including Qureshi.
The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) investigating the May 9 incidents concluded that Shah Mehmood Qureshi incited violence through social media. The report includes a forensic analysis of videos uploaded by Qureshi and claims he gave contradictory statements during questioning at Adiala Jail. A polygraph test further suggested he was not truthful during the investigation.
The JIT submitted its challan to the court which highlights Qureshi’s role in encouraging rioters who targeted sensitive installations like Jinnah House. Earlier, on July 15, 2024 Qureshi was indicted in a separate vandalism case. ATC Judge Khalid Arshad summoned witnesses scheduling further proceedings in the case.
