Police investigators stated that Balwani was returning home after withdrawing one million rupees from a private bank near Boat Basin when the robbers followed his car to snatch the money. According to the police, the suspects tried to stop Balwani's car near Punjab Chowrangi, but he did not stop, possibly realising that he was being followed.

Investigators had collected CCTV footage from the route between the bank and the firing location. During the money withdrawal at the bank, a suspicious person was seen near Balwani, who was believed to be an accomplice of the robbers and possibly informed them about the money. The robbers continuously followed Balwani's car and fired at it from behind when he did not stop. The suspects could be seen turning back and escaping on the road after the shooting.

Balwani's car collided with a truck due to its unusual speed, causing significant damage to the vehicle, according to the investigators. Zone South DIG Asad Raza said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the killing.
