Filing comments on a petition filed by the union committee chairmen of Bahadurabad and Jinnah Town against the allegedly illegal water supply connection to Chanesar Town from the main Kidney Hill pumping station, the KWSC said there were 8 union committees in Chaneser Town and they were getting water supply as usual.

A KWSC superintendent engineer submitted that the corporation was responsible for water supply and sewerage system in Karachi.

He submitted that the area-wise distribution of water had already been declared through schedules of water as per the water available for the city. He submitted that the water demand in Karachi was 1,200 million gallons per day (MGD), but in the present situation, the KSWC was supplying 600 MGD water per day from different sources.

The SHC was informed that the water supply to the city was 54 gallons per capita. He KWSC officer said water was supplied to the industrial and commercial entities after installation of meters while residential areas got water according to the size of connection.

He submitted that the KWSC was trying its best to accommodate those areas where water supply through line was not possible and water was being supplied there through tankers from seven water hydrants.

He submitted that there was also a policy for sanctioning water connection after fulfilment of codal formalities as per the rules and there was no discriminatory rules for suppling water to any area.

The high court had earlier directed the KWSC to submit the criteria under which water was distributed by the corporation within the city such as quantity per capita, quantity per area or quantity per water connection.

The SHC had directed the KWSC to file a report indicating the basis on which such a determination for allocation of water was made. After taking the KWSC report on record, the SHC vacated the interim stay order in respect of the 18-inch water pipeline from the Kidney Hill pumping station to Chanesar Town.
