Bid to smuggle over Rs170m gold foiled at airport

Customs officials at the Karachi airport foiled a bid on Thursday to smuggle gold to South Africa. According to customs sources, customs officials at the airport seized over nine kilograms of gold from a family travelling to South Africa. They added that the gold, valued at Rs170 million, consisted of various jewellery items and bars.

The family, holding South African passports, comprises five women and one man, and the gold was discovered during a search of the travellers’ belongings. Customs authorities stated that an investigation is going on to determine the facts behind the transportation of the gold.
