Cop escorting polio team martyred in Bajaur firing

KHAR: A cop guarding an anti-polio team embraced martyrdom when unidentified gunmen opened fire on him in Kankot area in Mamond tehsil of Bajaur tribal district on Tuesday.

Police officials said that Constable Azam Khan was on security duty with a team of anti-polio vaccination campaign when came under attack by unidentified gunmen in the Kankot area.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital, Khar, where he succumbed to the injuries.

The assailant fled the scene after committing the crime.

Soon after the incident, the police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to apprehend the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, the funeral prayers for the martyred cop was offered at the Police Lines in Khar.

Officials of district administration, police and relatives and people attended the funeral prayer in a large number.

The body of the slain cop was later shifted to his home town and laid to rest with state honours.

Efforts to eradicate crippling polio disease have been seriously hampered by the deadly targeting of vaccination teams.

Several policemen have been martyred in similar attacks in Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Lakki Marwat, Bannu and Nowshera and elsewhere in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recently.
