United States President Joe Biden took to stage at the White House correspondents' dinner on Saturday night to crack a few jokes about himself and a few more about his Republican presidential opponent Donald Trump, AFP reported.

"Of course age is an issue. I'm a grown man, running against a six-year-old," Biden remarked, teasing Trump while referencing to his age.

Taking a dig at the ongoing hush money trial, he said, "The only thing we have in common is our age; my vice president genuinely supports me!"

He also spoke about the "Stormy weather", referencing towards the adult star who Trump allegedly paid.

Biden remarked that Trump's strange comments on Gettysburg were "so embarrassing that the statue of Robert E Lee surrendered again".

Biden's appearance at the banquet is in keeping with longstanding tradition for the event, in which the president and the national media gather for a roast of the US leader.

The event was attended by the crème de la crème of American society, ranging from journalists to celebrities.

Later on in the evening, amid some self-mockery and Trump jokes, the 81-year-old president struck a more serious tone, telling attendees that Trump's rhetoric was a danger particularly after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, and that "the stakes couldn't be higher".
