KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar on Tuesday said the SSP and SHO concerned would be responsible for poor performance against crime.
Officials said Lanjar said this as he chaired a review meeting on the law and order situation in Ghotki and Sukkur police stations limits. The meeting also discussed the murder case of journalist Jan Muhammad Mehar and the Priya Kumari case.
A delegation of Hindu Panchayat, including the family members of Mehar and Priya Kumari, also called on the home minister and the IGP. The home minister assured justice to the families of the two victims at the earliest.
Lanjar constituted a special working committee comprising police officers to take the Mehar case to its logical conclusion as soon as possible and directed them to resolve the case under any circumstances.
A delegation of business community, civil society personalities and lawyers from Sukkur and Ghotki also met Lanjar and requested him to resolve their problems.
He gave instructions to the participants of the meeting that highways should be made safe for passengers, and to make the highways safe for passenger, freight vehicles and private vehicles, a foolproof strategy with far-reaching and fruitful results should be prepared.
He said outlaws who looted passenger vehicles, freight vehicles and other vehicles on the highways should be brought to justice and strict measures should be ensured at all levels against such elements. The home minister strongly directed the police officers not to tolerate poor performance against crime or delaying action against criminals. If any of the officers does not perform his duties keeping in view the requirements of public interest, then he will be stripped of his important responsibilities, he warned.
He added that truth and duty go hand in hand; otherwise everything becomes fabricated and baseless.
During the meeting, the home minister constituted a committee comprising commissioners, deputy commissioners, revenue, food department, forest department officials, and police and Rangers officials to prevent the sale and transportation of illegal crops cultivated in kutcha areas. He directed the committee to transfer the seized crops to the godown of the Sindh government after all due process.
" After 15 days, I will visit again and review compliance reports on the orders," he added.
IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon said the police are taking serious steps to eliminate crime; however, what is needed is that we must put an end to crime before it can flourish and thrive.
He said the police should ensure the elimination of crime within the scope of their powers and law while the role of police check posts on highways should be made more effective and integrated.
In addition, interaction should also be ensured during snap checking, patrolling and picketing, he said, adding that indiscriminate action against crime is a guarantee of sure success.
Of course, such actions add to the goodwill and reputation of the police, the IGP remarked and further said that IBOs should be arranged in such a way that robbers, their facilitators, stone pelters do not get a chance to escape.
