LAHORE: Former senator and senior Muslim League leader Dr Asif Kirmani has said Pakistan has always been harmed by power politics.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, he said ideological politics had been replaced by politics of money and power. He added that not the state but people had gone bankrupt and their purchasing power had diminished.

“Electricity and gas bills have made people mentally ill,” he said, adding if the government failed to provide relief to people in six months, the difficulties of the government would increase.

The poor and middle class were bearing the burden of billions of rupees of subsidies given to the elite, Dr Kirmani alleged and maintained that the governments did not run on rhetoric, tweets, press conferences and advertisements.

He demanded that the subsidies given to the elite should be directed towards the poor; otherwise, there would be a ‘revolt’ against the system through ‘voting’ in the next election. “People are eagerly waiting for relief,” he concluded.
