Islamabad : The Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has announced a perplexing schedule for spring vacations, drawing criticism for its inconsistency and disregard for academic needs.

According to a notification issued on Wednesday, the FDE has set spring vacations for Islamabad's educational institutions from April 8 to 12, with the new academic session slated to commence from April 15, 2024.

However, concerns have been raised over the overlap of these spring vacations with the expected Eidul Fitr holidays, which are anticipated to fall on the same days. This schedule clashingly coincides with the Eid holidays, prompting educational institutions to also observe Eid holidays during the same period as the spring vacation. This clash has drawn criticism from stakeholders, who argue that the purpose of spring vacations is to provide both teachers and students with a much-needed break after the conclusion of the academic session on 31 March. Traditionally, spring vacations were announced for the 1st week of April.

The teachers contend that this year's schedule effectively eliminated the intended restorative period by overlapping it with Eid holidays. A female teacher, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed frustration, stating, "After spending a hectic session, we need a break to recharge and prepare for the new academic session. Unfortunately, the FDE authorities seem unaware of the academic needs of institutions. She further pointed out the absence of a permanent Director General at the FDE, attributing the decision-making process to temporary arrangements. She urged the government for the appointment of a regular Director General who can make decisions that prioritize the academic well-being of students and teachers.
