Kamala Harris is the first US vice president or president to visit an abortion clinic, as per the White House.

She and the chief medical officer of US's Planned Parenthood took a tour of the facility in Minnesota, according to BBC.

Speaking at the clinic, Harris stated that the US was experiencing a "very serious health crisis" and that is why she was there.

Her fellow Democrats hope to use abortion as a wedge issue in the US elections scheduled for November.

"Right now, in our country, we are facing a very serious health crisis," Harris said at the facility in St Paul.

"And the crisis is affecting many, many people in our country, most of whom are, frankly, silently suffering," she added.

The first woman to be elected vice president, Harris, has been travelling to several swing states in recent months, including Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Arizona, to mobilise support for the abortion issue.

Approximately twelve people from each side were present outside the clinic during her visit, according to reports from the local media. Some, however, regularly stage protests against the facility.

Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life's co-executive director claimed that the visit "showed the Biden administration's full-blown devotion to extreme abortion policies."
