The Executive Board of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday closed down inquiry of procurement of 69 locomotives and 1,300 wagons on the basis of lack of incriminating evidence to continue with the probe.

The NAB board held its meeting on Monday with its Chairman Qamar Zaman Chaudhry in the chair in which the approval was given to close down two inquiries--one against officers/ officials of the Ministry of Railways and others regarding the procurement of 69 locomotives, and the second against officers/officials of M/o Railways and others regarding procurement of 1,300 wagons--due to lack of incriminating evidence.

Meanwhile, the NAB board decided to file three corruption references-- one against Asfand Yar Kakar, ex-Food Minister, Balochistan, and Ali Bakhsh Baloch, ex-Secretary, Food, Balochistan , and others.

In this case, the accused persons were alleged embezzling wheat amounting to Rs1,525.0122 million from Provincial Reserve Centre Sariab, Quetta, Balochistan.

Second, corruption reference was decided to file against Sheikh Muhammad Afzal, Chief Executive/Director M/S Harris Steel Industry (Pvt) Ltd, Lahore, and others.

In this case, the accused persons were alleged for obtaining illegal pecuniary benefits through corrupt, dishonest and illegal means and thereby caused corresponding loss to the NIB Bank Ltd.

Third corruption reference was decided to file against Prof Syed Khawaja Alqama, ex-Vice Chancellor of Bahuddin Zikria University, Multan, Malik Munir Hussain, ex-Registrar of BZU, Multan, and others.

In this case, the accused connivance with each other illegally established BZU sub-Campus at Lahore by misusing their authority and illegally obtained benefits to the tune of Rs960 million.

The Board also decided to authorise complaint verification against Azhar Qayum Nahra, sitting MNA of the PML-N from NA-100 and Mudassir Qayum Nahra, ex-MNA and others. In this case, the accused persons were alleged for corruption and corrupt practices and have amassed huge assets beyond known sources of income.

The Board authorised two inquiries: first against Javed Ahmed Siddiqui, ex-MPA (PP-197), Multan and others, and in this case, the accused person is alleged for accumulating assets beyond known sources of income.

Second inquiry was authorised against officials of the Ministry of Food Security and Research, and in this case, the accused were alleged for corruption and corrupt practices wich caused a loss of millions of rupees to the national exchequer.

The NAB board authorised investigation against government functionaries and other, firm M/s GE Energy Sharkpur, RPP Case. In this case, they were alleged for corruption and corrupt practices and misusing their authority in award of RPPs contract to M/s GE Energy, (Pvt) Ltd at Sharkpur.

The NAB board also closed down the inquiry against the government functionaries and others, regarding corruption / corrupt practices and misuse of authority by placement of Rs500 million with Trust Investment Bank Limited (TIBL) by Privatisation Commission, the EBM decided to approve the voluntary return (VR) request of Asif Kamal, Chairman, Trust Investment Bank Limited (TBL), of Rs404.8 million.

Meanwhile, addressing the board meeting on its conclusion, the NAB chairman reiterated that NAB is committed to eradicating corruption and corrupt practices by adopting holistic and proactive approach through enforcement besides awareness and prevention strategy across the country.

He directed all NAB officers/officials to put in their best efforts in conduct of complaint verification, inquiries and investigations against corrupts in accordance with laid down laws/SOPs, transparently and on merit.
