A US Secret Service member assigned to President Joe Biden's granddaughter Naomi Biden's security detail fired shots at people trying to break into a US government car in Georgetown, as per CNN.

“On Nov 12 around 11:58pm in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, Secret Service agents encountered possibly three individuals breaking a window on a parked and unoccupied government vehicle,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.

He added, “During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck. The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units” and that there was “no threat” to any of the Secret Service's protectees.

The agent in question was assigned to Naomi Biden's detail, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to CNN. The office of First Lady Dr. Jill Biden declined to provide a statement on the issue.

The Associated Press broke the story of the event first.

According to Guglielmi, the Secret Service and the DC Metropolitan Police Department are also looking into the incident. Referring inquiries to USSS, the DC Metropolitan Police Department declined to comment.

The event occurs in the midst of a rise in crime in Washington, DC.

According to DC police figures, motor vehicle theft has increased by 98% in the last 12 months.
