PESHAWAR: Elders and owners of forests from Dir Kohistan have demanded 80 percent share in the profit of forests in their area. Addressing a news conference here at the Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, president of Forest Owners Association, Dir Kohistan, Gul Sher said the forests and mountains located in their areas had been owned by their forefathers since long.
Gang of ‘fraudsters’ arrested

NOWSHERA: The police on Thursday arrested a gang of five men who used to give personal surety in bail pleas in courts by using fake documents and mutations. The police also recovered fake stamps and mutations from the accused. The police arrested the accused after a Civil Judge-cum-Judicial Magistrate Sheraz Tariq lodged a case against Sayed Abuzar Adil, Tauseef and Altaf Hussain.
Girl killed

JHANG: A girl was killed and another injured in an accident on Jhang-Gojra Road near Chak 447 on Thursday. Kiran and her friend Sawera were crossing a road when a van hit them. As a result, Kiran died on the spot while Sawera was seriously injured. The injured girl was shifted to the DHQ Hospital. In another incident, a motorcycle-rickshaw overturned on Massan Road. As a result, five people were injured.

KARACHI:The accused involved in the Axact fake degrees scam were provided photocopies of the case on the directives of the District and Sessions Judge (South) Sohail Muhammad Leghari, who conducted the proceedings in a court housed inthe Central Prison on Thursday. The key accused in the case, the Axact CEO Shoaib Shaikh,could not be produced before the court.When the judge inquired about the reason fornon-production of the key accused, hewas informed that Shaikh was unwell and hadbeen admitted to hospital. The court was further told that the key accused was being provided due medical treatment. Advocate for the key accusedShaukat Hayat and Investigation Officer (IO) in the case, Saeed Memon,were present in the courtroom. The court adjourned the hearing till April 16.
Huge cache of arms recovered in Bannu

BANNU: The police on Thursday arrested an alleged arms trafficker and recovered a huge cache of arms from him, an official said.Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Inayat Ali Shah told reporters that the police had received information that arms traffickers were planning to smuggle a huge cache of arms to Bannu. The police, he said, put the security on a high alert and established various checkpoints on the entry and exit points.The cops of the Saddar Police Station recovered 59 Kalashnikovs, 164 pistols, two repeaters and 48,000 cartridges from a truck and arrested an arms trafficker.He said the arms were being smuggled to Bannu for carrying out subversive acts. The arrested arms smuggler is being interrogated.
SC converts death sentence into life term
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has converted the death sentence of convict Khalid Saifullah into life-term in the murder case of his wife.Convict Khalid Saifullah had killed his wife over a domestic dispute.The trial court had awarded death sentence to Khalid which was later maintained by the Lahore High Court.The three-member SC bench headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan heard the case filed by the convict against his sentence.During the course of proceedings, counsel for the petitioner told the court that his client had already spent more than 16 years in Kot Lakhpat Jail. He pleaded the court to review the verdict.The court in its verdict converted the death sentence into life-term and disposed of the case.
Wanted hitman ‘who murdered 16 people’ held in Karachi

Karachi: The Counter Terrorist Department (CTD) said on Thursday an alleged target killer belonging to a political party had been arrested in Orangi Town.CTD incharge Khurram Waris said a most wanted hitman, Zeeshan alias Chille, was caught in a raid on a hideout in Orangi Town No. 4.He said one TT pistol and bullets were found on the suspect during the swoop, which was carried out on a tip-off.During the initial interrogation, Zeeshan admitted to murdering more than 16 people, including police constable Syed Shahid. The cop was shot dead in Paposh Nagar in 2014.
Farmers stage demo against sugar mill in Jhang

JHANG: A large number of farmers under the banner of the Pakistan Kisan Ittehad staged a sit-in against a sugar mill in front of the district complex here on Thursday. They also blocked all roads leading to the DCO and DPO offices. The protesting farmers with tractor-trolleys completely blocked the main gate of the district complex. The farmers alleged that the sugar mill was not paying their Rs700 million arrears. They demanded the district administration order the mill to pay arrears to them. The sit-in was under way till the filing of the report. Pakistan Kisan Ittehad district chairman Abuzar Bharwana, provincial secretary general Safdar Naol and others addressed the protesters.

FAISALABAD: Additional Sessions Judge Arshad Mehmood has issued arrest warrants for five police officials of the Mansoorabad police station for their failure to attend the court to record their statements in a murder case. They are SI Muhammad Ibrahim and constables Ejaz Ahmad, Zulqarnain, Ghulam Hussain and Tahir Nadeem.
Two commit suicide in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD: Two people committed suicide in separate incidents here. In the first incident, Ghulam Mustafa, a retired teacher of Haider Park, Gojra, committed suicide by swallowing poisonous pills over a domestic dispute. In the second incident, a young boy of a nearby village on the Faisalabad-Jhang Road committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan of his house over a domestic dispute.
Woman killed in Pakpattan accident

PAKPATTAN: A woman was killed in a road accident here. Liaqat Ali, 25, of Chak Pattipur, and his mother Hanifa Bibi, 60, were on their way when their motorcycle collided with another motorcycle near the Chak Malikpur Bypass. As a result, Hanifa fell on the road. In the meantime, a tractor-trolley crushed her to death. Liaqat was also injured.

As a result, they fell unconscious. They were shifted to the Allied Hospital where Abdul Haq’s wife Naziran Bibi, daughter Mehwish and brother-in-law, Muhammad Aslam died while Nazish, Abdul Ghaffar, Sanam and Iqbal were in critical condition. It is pertinent to mention that the marriage ceremony of Nazish was due on April 9, but now it has been postponed.
Constable shot dead in Chakwal

CHAKWAL: Two people, including a police constable, were shot dead in separate incidents in the area of Kallar Kahar police station. In Sar Kallan village, armed people shot dead police constable Zahid Yaqoob of the Punjab Police. He was moving toward cricket ground along with his three other friends. Meanwhile, a mine owner was murdered in Varala village. Adnan told the police that Saif Ullah accused his brother Zahid Ullah of stealing things. He said they arranged a local meeting to resolve the issue where Saif and Zahid exchanged harsh words and Saif shot dead Zahid with a pistol. He said later the accused tied them with ropes inside the mine and snatched cash.
APCA warns of protest

FAISALABAD: The All Pakistan Clerks Association (Apca) would launch a protest campaign against the government if their just demands were not met in a fortnight. Addressing a meeting here on Thursday, Apca provincial general secretary Abdul Aziz Bhatti demanded that the government employees of BPS-1 to BPS-4 working on ad hoc basis should be made permanent immediately. He also demanded upgrading of technical cadre workers and regularisation of contract employees of the Zakat and Ushr Department. Apca divisional president Imtiaz Ahmad and a large number of Apca members expressed their determination to continue the struggle to secure their basic rights from the government.

Motorcyclist dies in accident

TOBA TEK SINGH: A motorcyclist was killed on Wednesday night. According to Rescue 1122, Alam Sher, 45, of Chak 266/GB and his 60-year-old woman relative were on the way to Toba from Rajana. When they reached near Chak 295/GB on Toba-Chichawatni Road, a car coming from the opposite side hit them, leaving Alam dead on the spot and the woman injured.

FAISALABAD: District and Sessions Judge Abid Hussain Qureshi on Thursday convicted a tailor in a sodomy-cum-murder case. The judge awarded death sentence to Nasir Ali, a tailor of Chak 266/RB. The prosecution said that the convict had killed nine-year-old Zohaib after sodomising him.
