At least 16 people have been injured following a massive gas explosion Wednesday that has shaken Paris, causing several buildings to catch fire and sending flames and smoke into the air. No deaths have been reported so far.

According to a Paris police official, the explosion caused the facade of one building to fall onto the street, and numerous firefighters and police officers were responding to the scene.

Firefighters in Paris are currently battling the blaze, which reportedly erupted after an explosion and is sending smoke into the sky.

According to the DailyMail UK, officials said that it was still too early to pinpoint the fire's origin and that they were unable to confirm earlier claims that the explosion was the result of a gas explosion.

According to a local Paris city official on Twitter, the explosion took place in Paris' fifth arrondissement and was initially thought to be the result of a gas explosion.

In addition to issuing a warning for people to stay away from the area, the Paris police department stated that they were investigating the incident.

In videos and pictures from the scene, burning buildings could be seen with flames and smoke billowing into the air.

Images of burned-out and demolished structures were posted on social media.

A fire was reported to be raging on Rue Saint-Jacques in Paris' fifth arrondissement, close to the Jardin Du Luxembourg and Sorbonne University, according to French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin.
