Eight suspected Lyari-based gangsters, believed to be involved in extorting factory owners and traders in industrial zones and Old City areas of Karachi, were arrested in a raids conducted in Saeedabad, Gulshan-e-Jamal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and the Hub River Road area.
Counter-terrorism department anti-militancy intelligence group chief Khurram Waris he had formed two teams that had conducted these raids.
The eight men were identified as Abid Ali, Tanveer Ahmed, Jahanzeb, Jameel Ahmed, Fahad Bux, Mohammed Yasir, Zahid Hussain and Abdul Zahid. Police found 9mm pistols, grenades, repeater rifles, sub-machine guns and a large quantity of locally-brewed whisky at the gangsters’ hideouts.
Waris said the arrested men were members of the Uzair Baloch gang and were wanted in cases of target killing, attempt to murder, extortion, drug dealing in Lyari, Malir, and Saeedabad.
During interrogation, it was found that the gangsters had killed many people in the city including two at Malir 15 and three at Kala Board Malir.
They extorted traders and industrialists in Malir, the Old City areas, and the East and West districts.
The gathered information about traders and sent them extortion slips to their offices.
When the traders refused to pay them, they attacked their shops or homes with grenades.
Rangers arrests
Rangers said they had handed over 10 Sunni Teheek activists arrested for their involvement in target killing and extortion cases in police custody.
A Rangers spokesperson said the paramilitary force had arrested these men in a raid the at Sunni Tehreek’s headquarters at Moin Plaza on the night of June 18. Later, an anti-terrorism court allowed Rangers to keep them in 90-day preventive detention under the Protection of Pakistan Ordinance.
During interrogation, the arrested men had confessed to their involvement in target killing, extortion and kidnapping for ransom cases.
The details of these men are as follows: Mohammad Jawad Qadri alias Wajah was wanted by the Karachi police in 14 target killing cases and also worked with the Uzair Baloch gang for which he had extorted millions of rupees from the traders of Lyari and Singo Lane.
Zubair Ali was wanted by police in 13 target killing and three attempt to murder cases. He was also involved in robbery, extortion and kidnapping for ransom cases.
Mohammad Alam alias Baba was the in-charge of a target killing team and involved in 13 murder cases.
Mohammad Salman alias Mochee was involved in nine killings and also wanted in arson and kidnapping for ransom cases.
Akram Qadri was involved in six target killing and also wanted in extortion cases. Farhan alias Papa was wanted in six target killing as well as extortion cases.
Shakeel Ahmed alias Fauji was the Sunni Tehreek sector in-charge in Orangi Town and involved in target killing and three cases of attempt to murder cases.
Mohammad Arif alias Mansoori extorted people under the garb of collecting zakat and fitra and also involved in extorting shopkeepers. He was the Sunni Tehreek sector in-charge in Burns Road.
Noor Alam was the Sunni Tehreek Sector in-charge in Gulshan-e-Hadeed and involved in extortion cases while Mohammed Rizwan alias Guddu was involved in one murder case.
