Spanish police arrest Pakistani man

accused of promoting militancy

MADRID: Spanish police arrested a man from Pakistan in Barcelona on Tuesday accused of promoting “Islamist” militancy via social media, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.The man had been promoting the actions of various groups operating in the conflict zones of Syria and Iraq, especially Islamic State, the ministry said. Including Tuesday’s arrests, Spain has detained 24 people so far this year with suspected links to “Islamist” militancy.

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah has recommended the name of
Dr Saeed Qureshi as the Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Medical Science (Dums). According to the documentary evidence available with ‘The News’, the CM followed a proposal of the Search Committee and recommended Dr Saeed Qureshi as VC for formal notification.

 

President moves Pemra against two channels

ISLAMABAD: Perhaps for the first time, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has received a complaint from President Mamnoon Hussain against ARY News and Dawn News for airing a wrong news report about his health. According to a press release issued by Pemra, the matter has been referred to the Council of Complaints for deliberations.

 

Four booked in Pakpattan

PAKPATTAN: Four land grabbers were booked for threatening a police party of Arifwala police station. Police along with Naib Tehsildar Afzal raided Chak 28/EB to get nine marla land vacated from four accused, including Faisal, but they allegedly threatened them. The accused also refused to vacate the land. A case has been registered under Sections 447, 406, 353 and 186 of the PPC.

Militant arrested in Charsadda

CHARSADDA: The security forces arrested an alleged militant from a Madrassah in the Tangi tehsil of the Charsadda district on Tuesday, official sources said. Four Kalashnikovs were also recovered from the possession of the militant identified as Luqman Khan, a resident of Khyber Agency, the sources added.The security forces have intensified search operation in the district over the last few days. And it was the third arrest from the seminary in week. An alleged militant was arrested during a raid in the same seminary a day earlier.

 

Police party attacked by villagers in Pakpattan

PAKPATTAN: A police party was attacked by 45 people when it raided Chak 65/EB for recovery of a girl. Arifwala police station ASI Muhammad Imran and other policemen raided the village to recover seven-year-old Eman. Seeing police, the women raised hue and cry. Hearing the noise, 45 people, including Nadeem Iqbal, allegedly attacked policemen. As a result, Constable Muhammad Azam was injured. The accused also damaged the police vehicle and snatched two mobile phones from policemen. Police have registered a case under Sections 324, 382, 353, 427, 337-A2, 148 and 149 of the PPC.

 

Two convicted in ex-nazim’s murder case in TT Singh

TOBA TEK SINGH: Gojra Additional District and Sessions Judge Arif Mehmood Khan on Tuesday awarded death sentence to Bashir Ahmad and life imprisonment to Rashid Ali in a murder case. The court, however, acquitted two other accused Akram and Aslam giving them the benefit of the doubt. According to the prosecution, the convicts had killed UC ex-nazim Arshad Noori over an old enmity in 2008.

 

Traffic warden tortured by vendors, rickshaw drivers

FAISALABAD: A traffic warden was allegedly tortured by some vendors and rickshaw drivers at Nishatabad. Faizul Hassan, a traffic warden, was on duty when he tried to remove rickshaws and pushcarts from there to ensure smooth flow of traffic. To it, the vendors and rickshaw drivers, including Kalo, Bablo and Khadim, allegedly tortured him. He was sifted to the Allied Hospital in serious condition.

 

85 percent pictorial health warning on cigarette packs urged

SUKKUR: The partners of the Coalition for Tobacco Control Pakistan (CTC-Pak) during a press conference called for immediate enforcement of the 85 percent pictorial health warning on cigarette packets as per the Ministry of Health notification of 2015. The press conference was held at the Sukkur Press Club on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day.

 

Bomb hoax at Nishtar Hospital

MULTAN: A bomb hoax call created panic in the Nishtar Hospital on Tuesday. An anonymous call was received, informing that a bomb had been planted in the hospital. Following the information, heavy contingents of police along with the bomb disposal squad reached the hospital and declared the premises clear after a thorough search. Meanwhile, talking to journalists, City Police Officer Azhar Ikram said that a journalist received a call on his mobile phone from 0017027183444 and the anonymous caller informed him that a bomb had been planted in the hospital ward No-14.

 

Teenage girl kills sister in Sukkur

SUKKUR: A teenage girl on Tuesday killed her sister and injured her mother and father in Mithi. Urmila, 19, stabbed her pregnant sister, Sorath, to death while left her father, Ranoto, and mother, Chandi, wounded. Police said Urmila killed her sister over a domestic issue.

GUJRANWALA: The FIA arrested a human trafficker at Chainwali on Tuesday.  The FIA team led by SHO Waqar Awan raided and arrested accused Hassan. He was involved in sending people abroad through illegal means.

 

Protest in Bahawalpur against power outages

BAHAWALPUR: Hundreds of residents of Model Town B, Kausar Colony, Railway Road and other localities on Tuesday staged a protest at Chowk Seraiki against unscheduled loadshedding and inflated bills. The demonstrators raised slogans against Mepco, Bahawalpur Circle, and burnt their electricity bills and demanded immediate action against the local Mepco officials.

 

PO held after being discharged from hospital

FAISALABAD: The Shorkot police have arrested a proclaimed offender after doctors discharged him from the Allied Hospital. Muhammad Yasin, along with five other persons, was injured in the Sultan Bahu firing incident. He was under treatment in the hospital. He was being guarded by the police and was arrested after discharge from the hospital.

 

Brother’s killer gets death

DASKA: An additional sessions judge on Tuesday awarded death sentence to a man who had killed his brother. The court also fined accused Shahbaz Khan, who had shot dead Bilal Umar three years back in the area of sadar police over a domestic issue, Rs200,000. Police had registered a case against three accused. The court acquitted two co-accused.

 

Man kills father in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR: A man killed his father by administering him poison in a bid to extort property. Ahsan-ul-Haq poisoned his father Muhammad Bashir in Shaili Gharbi near Chishtian on Tuesday. Four daughters of the deceased informed the Shehr Fareed police about the incident and they shifted the body to the THQ Hospital, Chishtian for postmortem.

 

FAISALABAD: The ANF on Tuesday arrested amanw howastrying to smuggle one kg heroin in secret parts of a suitcase. Ataur Rahman, of Khushab, concealed one kg heroin in a suitcase in a bid to smuggle it to Bahrain. Hewas arrested by an ANF teamat the Faisalabad Airport.

COAS witnesses multi-national mly exercise in Turkey

ISLAMABAD: COAS Gen Raheel Sharif witnessed multinational military exercises EFES being held in Turkey. The army chief witnessed the exercise in two separate sittings oneMonday night and another Tuesday, the Inter- Services Public Relations news release here stated. Alongwith Turkish troops, the US, the UK, Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Azerbaijan and a contingent of Pakistani armed forces are participating in the joint exercises. Turkish president and defence minister also attended the exercise. Turkish president held separate meeting with the COAS and thanked him for Pakistan’s participation and his personal presence for witnessing the exercise. He said the exercise will enhance the existing close friendly ties between Pakistan and Turkey with special regard to the armed forces. The Turkish president praised Pakistan Army’s accomplishments in the Operation Zarb-e-Azb and contributions towards regional peace and stability. The COAS appreciated the Turkish armed forces for an outstanding conduct of the exercise of such magnitude and scope.
