PESHAWAR: Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai – a cleric from Masjid Qasim Khan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital – hinted on Tuesday that eye witnesses’ accounts for moon sighting will be considered on Sunday, 28 Shaban and said he cannot promise for the same day Eid and Ramazan across the country.
The minister chaired a meeting of Ulema from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who informed him about their grievances with regard to the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
The minister assured them the government would address their grievances and said the government wants Eid and Ramazan to be celebrated on the same day..
Popalzai said the central committee holds no religious authority, adding that he would welcome any evidence of moon sighting even if a meeting for this purpose is not being held.
The influential cleric told Sardar Yousaf that Masjid Qasim Khan would be open to accepting evidence of moon sighting on the 28th of Shabaan, the month preceding Ramazan.
