LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) Thursday again ordered the release of the alleged mastermind of 2008 Mumbai attacks following a tussle over his detention that has strained ties with India.
Lakhvi was granted bail in December, infuriating New Delhi, but hit with a detention order, which was cancelled and reinstated twice before the Lahore High Court ruling annulled it for a third time on Thursday. He has remained in prison throughout.
“Justice Anwar-ul-Haq of the Lahore High Court today suspended the detention orders of my client Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and ordered his release after submitting two sureties of Rs1 million each,” his lawyer Rizwan Abbasi told AFP.
“The honourable judge said it’s unconstitutional to hold anybody without any proof for more than 90 days.”Advocate General of Punjab Naveed Rasool confirmed the decision.“The honourable court has suspended the detention orders of Lakhvi; we will see whatever legal options are available to us to review the decision,” he told AFP.
