The prime ministers of Pakistan and India met in what appeared to be a chance encounter on Monday as world leaders converged for the inauguration of the UN Conference of Parties (CoP) 21 climate summit in Paris.

Video footage and photographs showed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi shaking hands and exchanging pleasantries before they sat down on the same sofa for a brief discussion.

"PM @narendramodi meets PM Nawaz Sharif at COP 21 in Paris," Indian External Affairs Ministry spokesman Vikas Swarup tweeted along with a picture of the two leaders shaking hands.

No details were released from either the Pakistani foreign office or Indian External Affairs ministry regarding what was discussed between the two leaders.

The short interaction comes at a tense time between the two countries as the Indian cricket board (BCCI) awaits its government's approval for a Pakistan-India cricket series at a neutral venue in Sri Lanka.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has already given his nod to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the series.
