Akram car attack: Driver sent on judicial remand, owner still on bail

KARACHI: A local court in Karachi has sent one suspect to jail on judicial remand in a case filed by former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram alleging he was shot at following a minor accident earlier this month.

Hearing the case here on Monday, the judge approved the judicial remand of Altaf Ahmed, the driver of the vehicle, until August 28 ordering police to submit a challan against the suspect in the next hearing.

A judicial magistrate had previously sent Ahmed on physical remand until August 17.

Meanwhile, the owner of the vehicle alleged to have opened fire at Akram following the accident is still on protective bail.

Major (Retd) Amirur Rehman, who is manager at a local security company, was granted pre-arrest bail last week by district and sessions judge Nadeem Ahmed Khan on a surety bond of Rs30,000.

In his bail application, Rehman claimed the car was being driven by his driver at the time of the accident and that he was unaware that his driver had hit Akram's car. He maintained that it was his driver who had argued with Akram.

But the driver, on the other hand, informed investigators that he was not responsible for the incident as the shot was fired by his employer.

The incident took place on August 5 after Akram claimed his car was hit by a vehicle near Karsaz.

Following a heated discussion, Rehman who was sitting in the back of his car stepped out of the vehicle and allegedly fired a shot at the cricketer’s car. However, he hurriedly left after a crowd began to gather around, claimed the former captain.
